Logon Account Help

Computer & IT

BLUF: If you are retiring soon and have been using your CAC card to logon to government websites exclusively STOP!

Sign up for DS Logon, ID.me and Logon.gov NOW and start using them BEFORE you retire. Doing this after you retire is harder to do.

Protecting your identity and Identity authentication is a BIG deal these days with the many identity thieves and hackers out there.  As such identity verification has gotten much harder, much more strict, which is why some processes are as hard as they are.

DS LOGON (DoD Self-service Logon)

DS Logon is the Department of Defense Self-Service Logon system, an secure enterprise credential used on DOD and Veterans Affairs websites. Some of the websites using DS Logon include: eBenefits, TRICARE Online, Beneficiary Web Enrollment (BWE), milConnect and many others.

Logon Required Every 180 Days: Effective April 1, 2023, you are required to sign in at least once every 180 days (6 months) to prevent your account from being deactivated.

LOCK-OUT Periods: If you receive a message you are locked out for 1 hour due to too many attempts to enter your one-time PIN or 31-days due to too many remote proofing attempts, you MUST wait as advised. The DMDC Customer Call Center (CCC) cannot assist with unlocking your ability to remote proof as the lock occurs at the data vendor site. If you have a CAC, you can use that credential to log in. Please see FAQs below located in Need Support? for additional details.

Things to know about DSL Accounts

  • Your DEERS record must have a US (stateside) telephone number listed in the HOME phone section.  Any US number will work as a HOME phone number, including Skype, MagicJack etc.
  • If you already have a DSL account, but it was disabled or suspended, check with DEERS and make sure your US number is listed there in the HOME phone section.  The ID card Verifying Official there can add it if not listed. This will trigger an update that will allow the DS LOGON Help Desk agent (800-368-3665) to enable your account.
  • If you do not have a DSL account, and are requesting one for the very first time, you must not only have a US stateside phone number, but also access to it to receive text messages.  During the creation of a new account they will text you security codes.  Skype, MagicJack, etc will not work for this.  You must us an actual US number.
  • If you LOCK your existing DS Logon account: Call the DMDC Contact Center at  800-368-3665.  You must still have a US phone number in DEERS, but they WILL NOT text you.  They will then reactivate your DS account.
  • If you do not have a DS Logon account, you may request one at a DEERS/RAPIDS ID Card Office when you get a renewed ID card.  The ID Card Verifying Officials (operators) can only request an account for you during creation (renewal) of an ID card, and if you don't already have an account. You will later receive email instructions from DS Logon and must activate your account within 24 hours of that email.

ID.me

ID.me is a trusted technology partner to multiple government agencies and healthcare providers who provides secure digital identity verification to those government agencies and healthcare providers to make sure you're you—and not someone pretending to be you—when you request access to their services online.
Create an ID.me Account

Alternative logon account for SSA.gov and VA websites

ID.me has a Government Services Hub, an alternative to the DS Logon for several government websites to include SSA.gov, VA websites and IRS.gov. This is not a DOD account, but it is government approved and one of the key alternatives to DS Logon.

Creating an account DOES require a U.S. phone. It also ends with a computer video chat with an ID.me trusted agent. You do not call them! They will put you in a waiting queue on the website with an accurate and visible countdown timer on the web page to let you know how long before the agent will be with you (which could be hours, hence the clock). The countdown clock allows you to do other things while you wait, and come back later.  There have been stories where the wait was only minutes, but be prepared.

ID.me Help Center Logo

IF (when) you have issues creating an account, refer to their online Help Center at https://help.id.me/hc/en-us.

IF the issue is that you do not have a U.S. Phone and get stuck in the process, visit their Verifying your identity on a video call at https://help.id.me/hc/en-us/articles/360052242853-Verifying-your-identity-on-a-video-call

This is NOT an alternative for TRICARE websites!

ID.me Works with these sites:

  • SSA.gov
  • All VA Websites
  • IRS.gov

LOGIN.gov

One account and password - Login.gov is a secure sign in service used by the public to sign in to participating government agencies. Participating agencies will ask you to create a Login.gov account to securely access your information on their website or application, which then allows you to use the same username and password to access any agency that partners with Login.gov. Create a LOGIN.gov account

This also DOES Require a U.S. phone

FAQ's DS LOGON

You must have a U.S. phone number and access to the phone to receive text messages during this process.

DS LOGON registration procedures s a 10-step online process that requires a U.S. Phone.

This process can take up to 10 minutes to verify your identity. Individuals will be consenting to a soft-inquiry on their credit reports and receive a one-time PIN to the U.S. phone number on file. Prior to starting this, please ensure you have time and access to your U.S. phone.

It is difficult. However, if you visit a DEERS/RAPIDS ID card office and obtain a replacement retiree ID card - during that process a DS account can be requested.

No, RAPIDS operators cannot create an account for you, But they can request it while you are getting a new ID card. You must have a US telephone number listed in your DEERS record.

  • While you are getting a new ID card, notify the Verifying Official that you want a DSL account
  • Provide the RAPIDS Operator with your email address and follow the steps the RAPIDS Operator provides. They will verify a US phone and/or ask you for it.
  • You will receive an email with the activation steps within 24 hours. This email is only good for 7 days.

Yes, for some websites an ID.Me account is a substitute logon credential for DSL.  It does not require a U.S. phone

During the process, towards the end, ID.Me will schedule a video call with you and an agent who will visually verify your documents (Passport, ID, etc) by you holding them up to the camera during the video call. Sometimes you have to wait a few hours for this video call, but they keep you constantly informed with an online countdown clock and information.

ID.me helps you prove your identity and group affiliation across multiple DOD websites. It serves the same purpose as the physical ID cards you carry in your wallet – but for the internet. They use bank-grade encryption to keep your personal information safe, and you always have control over what information gets shared.
